Comic Book Strip
The purpose of the comic was to create an easy way for anyone to understand what the children of immigrants go through. A picture is worth a thousand words and that is what I tried showing in the comic. If you look at it clearly, the scenes that are more depressing have darker colors to create a sad mood, so that the audience understands the emotions going on. The fact that is a comic and not some other writing is significant because the target audience of the comic is the parents of the children of immigrants. They have been told countless times that their kids need help but many still don’t do anything to help so I thought a comic would be an interesting approach and worth a shot to try to convince them to get their kids the help they need. Of course as the comic shows that psychiatric help is not always available but if the parens start understanding that their kids are overwhelmed I feel that that would be a victory. The comic is a parody of typical superhero comics because this comic also has a protagonist and antagonist. The antagonist in this story is the mental illness villain that has been attacking the lead character. The villain is colored red to represent evil and also the scene where he has introduced shows as if he is shooting a ray of negative energy towards her which of course makes her situation worse. The most important scenes I want the parents to pay attention to are scenes eight and nine because that shows a conversation between a mother and daughter. In those scenes, the mother tells the daughter she is disappointed because she sacrificed so much for her and the daughter replies saying she is trying her best. I just want the parents to understand and take that if their kids are not living up to their sometimes unrealistic ideals that it’s okay because their kid is still trying as hard as they can for them.
Poem
Overwhelmed
how can i ever give back to my parents
they gave me everything
the ultimate sacrifice
traveled to a place unknown
for me
im overwhelmed
im young and i know i need to be great
for them
dreams of one day buying them a big house
dreams of retiring my father
dreams of my mom never worrying again
im overwhelmed
they dont see it
no matter the countless times i tell them…
i need help
for me
to help give back
to them
im overwhelmed
i dont understand their pain
they dont understand mine
they never experienced staying up late at night
to study for a test
to make sure you comprehend
so at the end
you can come home and say you got an A
for us
if only they knew…
im overwhelmed
A poem is usually used to show the emotion of how someone is feeling. I thought that if I used a poem I would be able to accurately depict how the children of immigrants feel. My stance is that the children of immigrants have it bad and they aren’t getting recognized that they are struggling. I hope that this poem brings light to the struggles of the children of immigrants. The poem also has a sad tone that the people that go through the same thing relate to. The language used reflects the words the children of immigrants think of like wanting to retire your father and overall the fact that most children of immigrants can agree with the fact that they are overwhelmed. Also in the poem, I let go of all the grammar we need to follow such as capitalization and the use of apostrophes. I don’t know what it is but doing that makes the poem look sadder so that adds another element to the mood of the poem. It is as if I’m just venting all of my feelings so I don’t have time to be using capital letters or proper punctuation and apostrophes. Doing that also makes the words more significant because that means the only thing that matters is the content of the poem and not the way it was written.
